It is desirable to have the backing and batting be 4 inches larger than your quilt top all the way around. So measure your top and add at least 8 inches to the length and width. The quilt top is pinnned to a leader on the longarm and rolled on a pole as it is quilted. So additional fabric is needed for the backing and batting. You can have more than 8 inches in width but it isn't necessary. It is however very nice to have more than 8 inches in length of that isn't too much trouble! The beautiful quilt pictured does have more in width but that is not necessary.

Quilt compliments of Kim Dove.
